SHORT DESCRIPTION: The president Obama announced steps to reduce dropout rate and prepare students for college in March, 2010. Approaches to solve the America’s dropout crisis involve efforts from multiple parties, including teachers, students, parents, curriculum workers, etc. Reducing dropout rates should necessarily take into learners' identities and the multi-cultural context in U.S. into consideration. Undoubtedly, solutions and reforms in the globalized America have significant meanings in global education. This presentation will analyze races, gender, and other identity issues under the umbrella of education in a nation of diversity, dig out the reasons of poor academic performances of minority groups, and then suggest a plausible and comprehensive direction. The analysis and recommendation in this presentation will certainly shed light on education in other countries and wholly in a global context.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: In today’s competitive environment organizations are looking for such employees that are capable of demonstrating superior performance at work at all levels. This is because the success of the organization largely depends on its workers who are at the front when communicating with clients and customers. In reality majority of employees do not possess such skills or had no chances to develop them in an organization because of the nature of work or simply lack of interest. Therefore, when preparing future businessmen, private sector workers or just ordinary citizens at the tertiary level, it is crucial to develop global competencies to enable them to function in international and multinational environments. This will prepare students for life. Global competencies are those skills and knowledge that people need to understand today’s world and be able to integrate across the disciplines with the view of understanding global events and address them.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Most countries try hard to become a Knowledge-Based Society. This trend creates more problems than it solves because very often we know too much and understand too little. In my opinion, it would be a better aim if we could create a Comprehension-Based Society. This problem is especially serious in Blended Learning and other partly or wholly virtual learning environment, where knowledge is relatively easy to provide but the lack of comprehension can cause grave problems. Another fashionable slogan in most countries is Life-Long Learning which is a serious threat for people who experience a great deal of stress through learning.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Global Dreamers: Peace Project. The Dream a Dream project was developed by Mrs. Marsha Goren of Ein Ganim School Israel in 2000 and first met the Internet in 2001. The idea started as a vehicle to encourage children and educators to share in a learning environment that would lead to global communication and tolerance. It inspires children to take a deeper look at the world by exploring, exchanging ideas, and using research tools, which supports a positive learning environment and a shared learning experience. Because of the war between Israel and the Palestinians which began in December 2008, schools were invited to join the peace project. The children felt the need to express their feelings on the subject together with many partners around the world.

Girls participate in a series of workshops designed to support their leadership and literacy learning. Participants receive mentoring and read and write together in ways that help them explore their sense of self as well as put their ideas out into the world. Clubs are connected via blogging and emailing, inspiring and motivating participants to make an impact both in their own communities and with their fellow Girls Clubs around the world.

In both cases, students live with host families for the week they are in the country and shadow a student from the host school. Through these programs, the students learn about the host country’s culture and teach other students about their own. Because of these global connections and continued communications through email, the cultural and physical boundaries between our countries continue to shrink. SHORT DESCRIPTION: Street Food: Contribution to Food and Nutrition Security. What are Street Foods? Street foods consist of locally available food stuff prepared at home or in the streets and sold openly in the streets or along house/shop corridor. They are common in most countries in the world and mostly cheaper than hotel foods in large cities. Such are roasted sweet potatoes, wheat snacks, potato chip and crisps. Who is the main target? Street foods are affordable to low income earners but also attract the pockets of highly paid persons due to their freshness. However, most street foods are exposed to unhygienic conditions and may not be the best to healthy life. Considering that "We are what we eat" where eating is an agricultural act and a political statement, "Our eating daily meal can change the world"!

PRESENTER: Osmond Mugweni, Africa 2000 Network Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe)
TIME: Not Scheduled
SESSION ROOM:CLICK HERE to enter the Elluminate session room, open one hour before session.
FORMAT: Keynote (by invitation only)
LANGUAGE: English
SHORT DESCRIPTION: Abstract: Scope presentation: Holistic Resource Management with a focus on Sustainable Grazing Management for Semi-arid Rangelands: Osmond Mugweni. In the Shona culture and belief system, the land evolved with herding grazers and the absence of one results in the destruction or extinction of the other. Numbers game had no role to protect vegetation then. The conventional grazing management belief that “too many animals cause overgrazing” is a misconception of the semi-arid savanna environments of Southern Africa where these environments evolved with thousands of herding grazers such as wildebeest, buffalo, elephants with their predators lions, leopards, cheetah and hyena. When animals intensively grazed for short periods (at most a month) they left and came back after one or two seasons. Predators (lions, leopards, cheetah, hyena etc) controlled the timing of rangelands use by grazers as they kept the grazers bunched and moving. The Shona believe that overgrazing is caused by inadequate recovery period for grazed plants. They view that in conventional grazing management overgrazing is due to continuous grazing or rapid rotational grazing cycles where the plants are continuously exposed to the animals or grazes too soon in a rapid grazing cycle. Pilot work conducted for the period 1986 to 2002 as regards time controlled grazing; overgrazing, rest and animal impact in semi-arid/brittle environments/rangelands can be summarized as: Overgrazing weakens or even kills individual plants which reduce the ability of such plants to provide soil cover. Over-rest also produces this. The noted difference is that under overgrazing the plants are often of many age groups, while under over-rest the plants are usually old and dying with fewer young plants. High animal impact causes many plants to grow with tight plant spacing. On the other hand, no animal impact causes ever-increasing spaces between plants on capped soil surfaces. Overgrazing with low animal impact and no herding behaviour causes large bare areas to develop, similar to what is produced by effects of over-rest. Overgrazing combined with high animal impact, which is common in Zimbabwean Communal Areas, accompanied by herding behaviour, results in tight low vigour plant communities of a near mono-culture with a high proportion of growing leaf and young plants. Time controlled grazing combined with high animal impact and herding behaviour produces multi-species of healthy, tight plant communities with a good age distribution, which would support many other life forms on such a land. This seems to be the desirable productive, ecologically stable and sustainable system to be promoted for the future management of Communal Grazing. The Solution for Semi-arid rangelands degradation: Time controlled grazing based on Indigenous Shona Grazing Management Practices. Heavy stocking rates for short period followed by long recovery periods. Land divided into adequate units such that 1/3 of the area is grazed in early summer, 1/3 in late summer and 1/3 receive full summer recovery period (not grazes). These units are rotated annually. This is simulation of the community herding that was characteristic of the Shona hamlets of Zimbabwe in the 16th to the 18th Century.
