When they do take the risk, however, the results can be amazing. This presentation will showcase the work of a group of teachers at Open Access College in Adelaide, South Australia, teaching a unit in year 10 English. The unit incorporated a study of the 2007 film Freedom Writers and a visit to an exhibition of artefacts and artworks inspired by the Holocaust. The use of an online forum in Moodle to facilitate student interaction has been an important and incredibly successful part of the process. Students were engaged in the learning, proactive in their participation, and showed a very high level of initiative and critical thinking. Open Access College is the Distance Education school of the Department of Education and Children’s Services in South Australia.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Current models of Professional Development (PD) provision are being evaluated. As a result, one of the mainstays of education intuitions, the generic workshop, has been identified as having number of fundamental flaws. The Virtual Professional Development model currently being piloted in NZ with ten tertiary, secondary and primary school teachers from a variety of locations ranging from Kaitaia to Canterbury, may offer some alternatives. Unlike generic workshops, national facilitator mentors teachers to develop their own highly-contextualised learning plans. The resulting VPD is proving to date to be mainly 1) about affective factors - community, belonging and relationships; 2) a personalised curriculum; and 3) an experience where upskilling takes second place to a teacher's own learning 'journey' which is all about their identity as educators and their beliefs about learning.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Modern educational technology tools have become complex enough that without a sound theoretical “lens” through which teachers can view them, their true usefulness as teaching tools may be obscured. We have adopted the paradigm of student-centered learning (SCL) to guide the use of a variety of educational technologies in an online chemistry course at UIUC. Although the tools we use are often specific to the field of chemistry, the lessons we have learned from developing a student-centered approach to the use of technology have proven extremely valuable for maintaining a high-quality online learning environment. Global education initiatives, which often use educational technologies to connect experts with students across the globe, could benefit from these lessons. We will discuss strategies for unlocking the potential of educational technologies through honest appraisals and analyses of their value for students.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Web 2.0 bring the world to our classrooms with a wide variety of tools allowing our students to communicate with people across the United States and around the world via “social language learning”. However, this communication risks remaining superficial if we don’t pay attention to cultural intelligence. Cultural intelligence requires students to understand the culture with which they are communicating, and in order to understand that culture, they must be able to communicate in the language of that culture. Just as we draw attention to the communicative competencies that we practice in class daily, we must also highlight the cultural competencies that our students need in order to successfully connect and communicate with the world. The intertwining of those two competencies define the critical 21st century skill that world language classes contribute to the education of our citizens

SHORT DESCRIPTION: I am the environmental coordinator at the International School Bangkok in Thailand. I have a passion for the planet and involving students into making change. People often want to help the environment but are unsure of what they can do. This presentation will help. Over the past 7 years our school has made significant environmental changes. This presentation is about providing successful projects, done by students, that have worked to change our school, our community and even businesses. It will show a list of changes and activities, things we do in the environmental stewardship elective class, our student Green Panther organization and our more recent projects, such as working with business to ban plastic bags, reducing bottled water sales, and Meatless Mondays. Have you ever heard of Carrotmob? It is a worldwide movement to help businesses change. We were the first Carrotmob in Asia and helped a grocery store ban plastic bags and earn $20,000 USD at the same time. We used Facebook to build our mob and today we have more than 8500 people in Thailand. This method is catching on and businesses such as 7-11 and the government of Thailand are interested in working with us to make this happen a larger scale project for the country. SHORT DESCRIPTION: Micro-finance, or micro-credit, has gained momentum over the last quarter century since Muhammad Yunus came up with the idea of loaning money to the poorest people in the world. I incorporate micro-finance into a unit I teach called The Global Economy: An Interconnected Planet because micro-finance has proven to be not only a powerful way to help people out of poverty, but it also connects humans throughout the world. In this presentation, I will share a 3 day, student-centered mini-project on micro-finance that engages students and allows them to drive their own learning. The project incorporates the use of technology and is centered around the organization Kiva, an online micro-lending website.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: Topic: Resilient Education in Emergencies. Introduction. Emergencies are situations that pose immediate risks to health, life, property or environment. Most emergencies require urgent intervention to prevent a worsening of the situation, although in some situations, mitigation may not be possible and institutions and organizations may only be able to offer palliative care for the aftermath. Types of emergencies include dangers to life, dangers to health, dangers to property and dangers to the environment. A resilient education system on the order hand has to be based on the notion that it is a human right and training facilities should be established based on legalities. In existing chaos and reconstruction, a resilient education should be available to all sections of society, it should be accessible, acceptable and adaptable to the needs of the community involved. Recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, together with the flooding in Pakistan and Niger have been considered overwhelming emergencies. The flooding in Pakistan has even been described by the United Nations Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki Moon as a ""silent Tsunami"". However, life must go on and children in these emergency situations will need to be assured of their future prosperity by providing them with the needed education. It is against the need for such needed education during emergencies I will like to make a presentation on ""Resilient Education in Emergencies"". Objectives 1. To understand the basic characteristics of education in emergencies 2. To identify new methods of responding to education in emergencies of the 21st century. Methodology. Reconstructionists have been challenged by the new wave of emergencies across the globe. Education has been identified as a means to creating a new social order and providing children and the youth with hope and sustainable development. This presentation will look at contemporary resources providing resilient education to communities in emergency situations. Reports of the United Nations and other relevant organizations working on education in emergencies will be reviewed for my presentation.

Students should possess and gain knowledge of the interdependence of people; understanding of one's own culture and other cultures. My book TEACHING AS A LIFESTYLE: Accessing Learning and Love Through the Arts is dedicated to the "spirit" of transformation through individualized gifts that we all possess. I believe that the classroom is a laboratory for exploring, discovering, sharing and creating for the benefit of humanity; and the arts are an effective venue for these actions. The arts defined as creative writing, dance, music, theater, and the visual arts.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: As the date for end of course standardized tests approaches, it is common for schools to do intensive content review with students. Students can become overwhelmed with the review process. One way to liven up and enhance the review is to partner with a school that is teaching the same content and play a review game with them live through a video conference. In this presentation we will share vocabulary review games using videoconferencing. This concept could be replicated with any group of students studying the same content, and speaking (or learning) the same language. Target outcomes include: oral language development, application of key content area vocabulary, team building, and application of problem solving strategies.

SHORT DESCRIPTION: This session presents user experiences from a web-based learning environment for computer programming. In this system, students write programs, which are then automatically tested and results are reported back to the students immediately showing their mistakes. The environment allows the teachers to follow student progress and react, when there are signals indicating problems in learning. It is also possible to compare the students’ program codes in order to detect plagiarism. The learning environment includes a theory part of each programming language making it possible for the students to study whenever they want and wherever they want. The system is fully web-based and locates on the service provider’s server, so the users do not need to install anything. In practice, traditional classroom is not necessarily needed and teaching or support can be provided globally. Surveys show that the students appreciate the freedom the system offers and also the immediate feedback.
